Everything you need to know About Roof Styles

Basic Roof Styles

There are four kinds of roofs. A flat roof is the most well-known. They aren't installed fully and level, or they won't permit any runoff. They are a benefit of being more affordable to maintain and install by Pittsburgh contractors who work on exteriors and are easier to handle.

Skillion Roof

When a single plane of roof or flat roof is placed on the building at an angle with one wall higher than another, it's no longer a flat roof , but it's called a skillion roof.

Gabled Roof

The roof, similar to an upside-down v where the roof isn't able to meet the wall that ends it is a gabled or gable roof. Gable is the upside-down V at the end. Gable roofing is a simple one that has one central ridge.

Hipped Roof

Hip roofs, also known as hipped roofs are roofings that join the walls in a horizontal manner. A typical hipped roofing has the central ridge. In place of the triangle of the gable that is vertical, it is tilted backwards to form two hips or ridges.

Cross Gabled and Hipped Cross Hipped

Most houses aren’t just rectangles and squares. A L form or T shape home can have two gables roofs that join with a valley at the interior angle. It's referred to as a cross-gable roof.

Hipped roofs are the same. The L or T shape can be covered by a cross hipped roof.

Mix and Match

Roofs can be a mix of these fundamental styles. You could have the gabled roof set at an angle or even a hipped roofing. Sometimes, for decoration, the hipped roof as well as the gabled roof are joined together in the style known as Dutch gable.

Other Styles

There are other styles that are variations of these basic forms. An A-frame , for example, a gable that is exaggerated of Gable. Another variation of gable is the gambrel roof, which is a barn roof that has a gently sloped top, followed by an incline that is steep. A mansard roofing style has the same gentle and steep pitches but is more hipped than gabled.

These types of roofs can have practical applications. Gambrel roofs provide more space and allow for better snow removal than roofs that have an incline that is steeper.

Gabled roofs are generally less costly to construct as compared to hipped roofs. However, they are more resistant to high winds. It all comes down to individual preference. Siding Pittsburgh Contractors have also stated that the majority of roofing styles work at keeping the rain from coming in and won't fly off if properly secured. It’s the appearance of the roof that matters.
